As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Turkey is a nation which quite literally straddles two continents with its most famous city, Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), lying on the Bosphorus Strait that splits Europe and Asia. Turkey is home to a huge array of historical sights, ranging from the multitude of attractions in Istanbul (the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace), the nation's capital of Ankara (home to the mausoleum of Ataturk), the bustling city of Izmir, the beautiful port town of Sinop, and the sites of Troy, Pergamon, Cappadoccia and Ephesus. Marmaris, Olympos, Bodrum and Bergama are also increasingly popular with tourists both young and old.
Turkey is serviced by a number of transportation sources that range from air, sea, rail and road entry. The major airports include Ataturk International and Sabiha Gokcen International, both near Istanbul, as well as Esenboga International (near Ankara), Adnan Menderes Airport (near Izmir), Dalaman Airport (near Marmaris), Antalya Airport and Milas-Bodrum Airport, amongst other more minor hubs. Airlines that service Turkey include British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet, First Choice Airways, Onur Air, Turkish Airlines, Sky Airlines and Thomsonfly. Rail connections from Europe in the north, the Middle East in the south and Asia in the east are frequent, particularly to Istanbul. Ferry connections from the Greek Islands to towns along the Aegean coast are also common. Car hire is one of the best ways to explore Turkey, particularly as it allows you to travel in comfort (far from the clutter of the public transport). Car hire companies such as Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, National-Alamo, Budget and Avis are located throughout the country. |
